China's summer movie season generated 12.5 billion yuan (about $1.7 billion) in ticket sales, according to a report from 21财经 published Wednesday. The total marks a second consecutive year of growth for the period, which runs from June through August.
Films associated with director and actor Stephen Chow and comedian Shen Teng were major drivers of the season's performance, 21财经 reported. The outlet highlighted their roles in drawing audiences to theaters during what several Chinese media outlets described as an unusually chaotic release schedule.
Other reports cited by 21财经 put the final summer tally at 12.498 billion yuan, with 340 million total admissions. First-tier cities accounted for 19.2 percent of the box office, according to Xinhua. Notably, the season's top-grossing film fell short of the 3 billion yuan mark for the first time in five years, a sign that revenue was spread across many titles rather than concentrated in one blockbuster.
